APABA Endorses Luis Rodriguez for California State Bar Board of Governors

May 30, 2010

On April 30th, the California State Bar mailed out ballots for the State Bar Board of Governors election.  District 7, which includes Los Angeles, has two seats open.  Four qualified candidates are competing to win Seat 2 in our district.

APABA encourages its members to vote for Luis Rodriguez to represent our district on the Board of
Governors.  Mr. Rodriguez has shown commitment to increasing diversity within the profession
throughout his career.  Since graduating from Santa Clara Law School in 1994, he has been an attorney with the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office.  Mr. Rodriguez currently serves as manager in the Public Defender’s Office.  In that capacity, he has worked tirelessly to ensure that Asian Pacific Americans and other people of color are visibly represented at the Public Defender’s Office.  Mr. Rodriguez is also the immediate past chair of the California State Bar’s Council on Access & Fairness, where he sought to implement programs to make our profession more inclusive.

Luis Rodriguez will also bring a wealth of experience.  Besides his managerial experience with the Public Defender’s Office and his experience on the Council on Access & Fairness, he is past President of the California La Raza Lawyers Association and the Mexican American Bar Association, and President of the Latino Public Defenders Association.  These leadership roles and experience will serve him well on the Board of Governors, where he will have to build strong relationships and coalitions to implement policy changes.

Lastly, we endorse Luis Rodriguez not simply for his experience and his past service to our profession, but also because of his potential to address issues concerning the Asian Pacific American community.  He has made clear his commitment to our community and concerns, including issues of diversity and inclusion.

Luis Rodriguez will be a great representative for our district on the Board of Governors.
