APABA ELDER LAW CLINIC

July 26, 2010

On Saturday, July 17, 2010, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA) and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center co-hosted their first Elder Law Day at Angelus Plaza, a low-income senior residential facility in Los Angeles.  The event consisted of a presentation on Elder Fraud and Identity Theft Prevention by APABA member James Toma, California Department of Justice, and Faye Chen Barnouw, Federal Trade Commission, followed by a pro bono legal clinic where volunteer attorneys, law students, public notaries, and other professionals assisted 40 elders with advance health care directives, power of attorney for finance, and statutory wills.  More than 50 elders participated in the event.

Chantal Denny, Director of Angelus Plaza’s Senior Activity Center, shared that the elders who participated in the event were very appreciative of the presentation and spoke highly of the services provided to the seniors during the legal clinic.  Sandra Howard, the Program Logistic Coordinator, shared positive feedback from the residents, including a phone call from the son of one of the participants expressing gratitude for the services provided during the legal clinic.

APABA and APALC would like to thank all of the volunteers who participated in the event, with special thanks to Dinh Luu of Goldfarb & Luu for training all of the volunteers, and Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, Mayer Brown, LLP and Gary Mikuni for providing notary publics, many of whom volunteered their time for the event.
